I like your article. :) Specially the historical touch you have brought into it. I was taken along with those who really did not like the branding and thought it a bad joke.
However, that phase is over and I believe it is time we accept the branding as it is and as Mauritian citizens we should try to use this branding in the best way we can. Cause after all, I can say it is not all that bad. It really depends on the way the message is delivered. We must now learn to say 'Mauritius - C'est un Plaisir' so that it is received in the way it was intended to. We have to work on ways to properly do that.
Let's not put all the blame on the Government for this. I believe that a foreign company was sought out so as to give the best branding for Mauritius, specially in this time of recession, and trusted Acanchi to do a good job (which we all agreed it didnt). So Acanchi didn't deliver the goods...The Government erred in not trusting our own designers. But believe me, even if a Mauritian Designer was selected, disagreements would still be here. Why designer X and not designer Y? *fooof*

My point is that no competitors are using the tagline. You could also say that most of India's competitors are 'Incredible', but they aren't calling themselves 'Incredible Australia' or 'Incredible Bangladesh', so India can use 'Incredible India'.

Flawed logic, if you ask me. :)

yours sucks too...but as you said, you designed it half an hour ago, and you were not paid 31 million rupees...meaning, anyone could have designed that crap, even my 5 year old cousin (if I had one)...It's a f***ing disgrace...creative people should work on those kind of things, not politicians...

I never tries Geocities, but I still remember that annoying advert in the sidebar. I am not sure, but I think that you got to click on the handle to hide it completely.

Later, hi5 became the craze for quite some time, and was quickly caught by Facebook.

Barring the issue of design, it is the brand which is most is most important. the money is not really paid for the logo but for the brand. Mauritius- C'est un plaisir actually talks to me. I like it but i might be biased because from my eye the design ranks second in importance. i would definitely see a corrobation between mauritius and pleasure. Being a long haul destination its not easy to attract people here. We can attract people here if we get an attractive message and I am attracted to pleasure.

Great post. I enjoyed reading it.
Your logo is better according to me- another "geek" or just intelligent Mauritian.
However, people not knowing what or who Mauritius is, wont decode your coconut tree as being an 'T'. Looks more like an 'L'. So it would read: Maurilius.
The colours are much brigher and more appropriate (Balanced and in the correct order- of our national flag).
The Sea Sun Sand Theme is good tough.
The Peter Both thing didn't fit in, neither did the 'T' thing on the original logo.
You should send a copy of your post to the government.

Like you am also a big fan of Dan Brown, I havent yet bought the Lost Symbol book...hopefully soon...I like Dan Brown cos he always talking about world mysteries that we would not think it existed...the Freemasonry had and still intrigue people...try to read this book - Secret of the Widow's Son...it is a guide to the ideas,symbols and historical issues to the Lost Symbol...a sort of prelude before the publication of the Lost Symbol...cheers:)
